Why Fundraising is Crucial to the Belleair Garden Club

Why Fundraising is Crucial to the Belleair Garden Club

Why Fundraising is Crucial to the Belleair Garden Club

The Belleair Garden Club needs funds throughout the year to support our scholarship and historic preservation programs.  In addition, maintaining a 95 year old building is very challenging!

In fact, the Belleair Garden Club is struggling with maintaining the structure built in 1931. It is the only building in Belleair on the National Historic Registry. The building was constructed on piers, which was a common practice at the time. However, without a slab, the joists that stabilize the structure are continuously exposed to moisture during our rainy season. Two years ago, one of the flooring joists failed, necessitating the removal of the floor, and uncovering a major renovation project. $50,000  was needed for that project to ensure that a portion of building is structurally sound.

Members have graciously donated funds to support a matching grant from the Florida Department of State, Historic Preservation Department which will partially repair the original windows. The front of the building is leaning forward and will require bracing jacks in the near future.  Water is fed to the building via the original line which failed a few months ago.  While the leak was repaired, the long term solution will be to replace the almost 100 year old line in the near future. These are just a few of the repairs needed to restore the building. Costs are estimated to be between $150,000 - $200,000.

The Club continues to apply for grants and has instituted a “Capital Campaign” to reach out to the community to request monetary contributions to help save the building.
